Stray

Based on a true story; Maia was inspired by a video on YouTube where  a dog in Chile was unfortunately hit by a car and wounded. Another dog dragged the wounded dog to the side of the road. The hero dog ran away.

Maia has managed to produce a beautiful book and subsequent animation from this harrowing tale.
Set in the outskirts of a large Chilean city, with the backdrop of the beautiful Andes, this is a tale of two stray dogs.

Teaching Ideas

  • Write a description of the opening scenes,
  • Use similes or metaphors to describe the dog sleeping below the huge moon with mountains in the background.
  • If dogs could talk - what would these dogs be saying to each other?
  • Rewrite the story in own words.
  • Write a newspaper report for the incident, interview amazed drivers and the dogs owners.
  • Write instructions for how to cross the road safely.
