The Supporting Act

The latest Christmas offering from The BBC, this delightful film tells a story of a 10-year old girl and her dad.  Throughout the film it seems that Dad is just too busy to spend time with his daughter.  In the end, we see that he has been paying attention after all.

Teaching ideas

Questions for discussion:
- What do you think is the girl's passion?
- Why is Dad so busy?
- Where is her mum?
- What advice would you give to Dad? (before the school talent show scene)
- How do you think the girl is feeling when her Dad waggles his finger on the phone?

The Talent Show
- How does she feel when the curtains open?
- How does Dad feel when he sees her up on the stage?
- Do you think Dad has been paying attention?

Writing Opportunities
Create a diary entry for the girl at various points in the film.
- Write internal monologues for the two characters.
- Retell the story in the first person from one of the characters point of view.
- Create a dual narrative using the two points of view.
- Write a letter to Santa in role as the girl, perhaps she asks for more than just material things.

Other activities:
- Host a class talent show,
- Learn the dance that the Dad and daughter do together at the end.
