The Lego Story
A true story about the history of Lego which can be used as a model text for writing chronological reports or biographies.
The narration of the text can be used to show directly what these texts look and sound like. Note the use of rhetorical questions in the opening section.
How paragraphs often begin with connectives, words to show when something happened or to show the passing of time. e.g. Many years ago, one day, suddenly etc.
It can demonstrate the links between paragraphs e.g: "It seemed like nothing could go wrong. But a stormy night in 1942 changed their luck.
Writing Opportunities
-Practice writing rhetorical questions for effect.
-Children could create lego models and write instructions
-Use model to create biography for a similar figure.
-Create an advert for the early toys
-Create biography for Ole Christiansen.
-Map his mood through the events in the story.
-Compare lego with other toys such as meccano or modern games and argue why Lego is best. Maybe worthwhile comparing with mine craft, listing similarities and differences, which is more engaging? Which is best for money? Etc
-Design own lego land - use Lego to build it. Draw maps, write brochures and visitors guides.
