Jotun - Journey of A viking
This video tells the story of a an unnamed viking warrior, on a journey through the landscape which contains a flashback and many key themes you will need to teach in a unit on the vikings.
- The opening scenes are excellent for descriptive writing of settings for stories. One is a deserted village and the next is an icy landscape. This could lead to a discussion about where the vikings were from, enabling you to teach some geography content from the curriculum. For lower key stage one a simple list of adjectives to describe the village/character/landscape could be made into sentence level work.
- The ships are a great opportunity to describe and make some deductions as to what had happened to them.
- The sword opens up a whole new are of writing - who does the sword belong to? who might have such a magnificent weapon?
- The battle could be described in any way you like, this usually yields some good writing.
- If you are teaching stories with flashbacks this is an ideal example of that and you could plan a unit accordingly.
- The end scene takes you back to the idea that this is a spiritual journey. The man puts the stone in pride of place on what we would describe as an altar. A discussion about viking gods and the militarisation of society could take place here.
