The Invention of love
This is a silent animation with a beautiful soundtrack. A man, an inventor, falls in love with a country girl. Pause at 3 mins and discuss what has happened – ask children to list events. Make predictions about what will happen next.
Pause again at 4:25 and repeat discussions and events. They have moved to a city away from her parents and family. City does not seem such a nice place – full of smog and factories. At 4:40 – 4:50 he seems too busy to go with her and she ventures into the city by herself.
She is desperate to see real flowers and animals again but is only surrounded by clockwork ones. Her husband throws out her only flower (reminder of home) and replaces it with a clock work one. She runs down into the depths of the city to get her flower back and falls ill. (7 mins1 second) The inventor learns of her demise and destroys all of the machines. At the end he creates a ‘new wife’ from the old machines.
Discuss with pupils the story behind the film – maybe it is saying that progress for progress sake is not always the best thing? You can decide on that one.
