Esther, a homeless woman, searches through a junkyard. She passes by objects of possible use or worth in favour of broken or old items – until she finds just the right treasure.
Teaching Ideas
- Describe the old lady's day as a first-person diary entry.
- Use descriptive language to show how special the objects are to Esther. Introduce hyperbole – for example, an old, leaky umbrella could be described as letting the sunshine through on hot days. How might something rusty be described to sound beautiful?
- Bring in some real objects for children to describe in this way.
- Link the theme to recycling and junk modelling projects.
