Where will reading take you this half term?
Bigger than Alexander - Introducing inference
This is a story about Alex a boy who doesn't stop growing. He gets bigger and bigger until he has to leave school.
There are many points in the story where it can be paused and discussed. The children will need to read the story with the rest of the class in order to engage.
Discussions could take place around Alex's leaving. Children could write letters to him telling him that they are missing him and what they have been up to.
Children need to infer at the end of the story who is bigger than Alex - his parents.
Children could write their own stories about someone or something that wouldn't stop growing - link to Jack and Beanstalk or Granny from George's Marvellous Medicine.

Encourage reading for enjoyment - a few tips
Have a wide range of books for the children to choose from.
Perhaps choose some high interest/low ability books for those who need them.
(It's not cool reading Biff and Chips in Y5)

The rights of the reader
Allow children some basic rights, don't enforce strict rigidity!
Give them somewhere to escape to with a book (this is my Y6 class reading corner)
Be enthusiastic about reading!
(Don't hand out boring, laborious, behaviour control activities in guided reading sessions.)
Share some of your favourite books with the children and read them with them regularly, even in year 6 children enjoy a relaxing time at the end of the day being read to. Choose something slightly challenging or something funny. Don't forget! Do the different voices!
