Dum Spiro

One Roman soldier's adventure with a bear

Picture
Dum Spiro is a messenger who has been asked by Caesar to take a message to The Barbarians, the problem is he is stopped in his tracks by a huge fierce bear living in the woods.

Although this cartoon has some Looney Tunes type action, it shows some Roman soldier armour etc to inspire the children.  With lower juniors looking at the Romans I would not show the whole film.  The sequences with the bear flying a helicopter could confuse them and allow them to think that helicopters and machine guns were weapons used by the Roman Legions.  With upper juniors this could be a good discussion about the types of weapons that were available to the Roman foot soldiers.

Animated biography of Charles Dickens (KS2) (BBC)

This animation from the BBC charts the highs and lows in the life of John Huffam Dickens.  From visiting his father in debtors' prison, working in a blacking factory, becoming a journalist, having many children and surviving a train crash this biography is a great introducton to one of the world's best known authors.

Teaching Ideas
- Note making - we need to develop this skill in children. I allow the children to watch the film individually on laptops, making notes as they go.  I then ask them simple recall questions which they need to answer referring to their notes.
- Children can use their notes to create a quiz for other children to answer.
- I like to use the Staplehurst rail crash as inspiration to write a newspaper story. There are many more sources relating to the crash only a google search away.
-A good introduction to Dicken's novels such as Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol.

Victorian Diaries

For more information

Click here - Channel 4 Learning have some examples of the diaries written but Maggie and the other characters.

1. School Days

The first in a series of diaries which introduce life in the Victorian times through the eyes of a ten year old girl, Maggie Johnson.

2. Upstairs Downstairs

In this second episode Maggie gets a job in Pockerley Manor as a junior maid. This seems to be a great opportunity until a character from Maggie's past turns up.

3. Strike

The workers at the match factory go on Strike. Maggie gets a new job as a photgrapher's assistant.

4. Down But Not Out

Maggie finds a new job and makes a new friend
Out of work and distressed, Maggie meets Bessie, who comforts her and helps to find her another job at the match-making factory, Bryant and May.

5. Final Chapter

Maggie and Jim get married and Susan does something quite unexpected.
In the last instalment of Maggie's story, years have passed, Maggie is married to Jim and they have two children.

Teaching Ideas

These films show a wide range of Victorian themes.
Write a diary based on a day in the workhouse, a day working as a servant or in the match factory etc.

These films could be used to support much of the teaching during a Victorian history topic or a creative curriculum unit.
