Rod Simpson was born and raised in the Newlands Valley, a picturesque and remarkably quiet valley in the Lake District National Park despite its close proximity to the popular tourist town of Keswick. As a young boy Rod helped on and around the local farms and grew up with an inherent interest in nature, and with many four legged friends!

Growing older, Rod became interested in photography and moved away from his beloved home to Lancashire to study photography at college and then university. His works often took their inspiration from the stunning scenery and the agricultural background which dominated his early years. With his degree in hand, Rod moved to Manchester, married and worked using his photography in a variety of different capacities, he even spent some years as a police photographer before opening his own advertising, design and photography studio. It was through his advertising studio that he began to work with a number publishing houses creating book catalogues, point of sale material and attending publishing fairs and children’s book exhibitions. It was through his connections with children’s books and publishing that Rod’s interest in writing his own stories was ignited and he knew his subject matter was to be taken from his own experiences of village life, farming and his love of the countryside.

Alongside running his own advertising and design business with his wife Liz, Rod has spent the last 10 years penning over 60 stories based upon life on Sunnybank Farm in a small village called Applegarth. His stories focus on a central character, Farmer Dan Button and together with a cast of loveable village characters and a collection of adorable farm animals and pets, Rod has created a timeless series of books with subtle moral messages. Rod’s aims have always been simple; to share his love of nature and to teach children important messages about enjoying the countryside. Each book stimulates and enriches the imagination of children, assisting in the learning and reading process - educating while entertaining.

Rod, now semi-retired, likes to focus on bringing his stories to children. He attends country fairs and agricultural shows, visits schools and nurseries and shares his books through book readings. Rod’s simple philosophy sums up why his books are so appealing to children, “All children can relate to farms and animals, even if you don't live in the countryside, because my stories are bringing nature and the countryside to them. The books are almost always written from first hand experience, even though some may seem to be the work of fiction, and it is these funny real-life situations, like horses being pulled free from the mud, or bulls unhinging the farm gate, which I think children love to read about! They make me giggle and smile and hopefully that’s how my readers feel too!"
